By Kimi Owens – Two months have rocketed by since my last entry. Remember how I was told it would get busy? I was braced for it, mentally pumped up, all my energy primed to go and of course nothing could prepare me for the reality of watching the packing shed’s transformation.

Hi. I’m Robert and I am an accountant that has been working for Farmer Al for about a year. Several months ago I moved to Pennsylvania for family reasons and Al agreed to ‘give it a shot’ with me working remotely, a decision which coincides perfectly with the innovative nature of how things are run at Frog Hollow Farm. It has been working wonderfully, but I did have one huge worry: I won’t be at the farm on a daily basis during the next harvest season to dutifully sample each variety of fruit fresh from the orchard! This was one of the best perks of being an employee of Frog Hollow Farm; there is always plenty of outstanding organic fruit to satisfy your appetite.

Things are going to jump from zero to sixty in the blink of an eye, I’m warned. Karen, who runs our CSA program, has been gently reminding me for a few days of how right now, I’ve got the easy job. In a couple weeks when the first of the cherries start coming in, no one’s job will be easy.

First Day on the Farm: Touring the Orchard
Kimi Owens
A cool April morning in Brentwood is a rarity, Farmer Al tells me. While we’re touring the orchard, ambling our way through rows of Frog Hollow’s legendary peach trees, the breeze does its best to sneak in between the weave of my sweater. I didn’t dress for this. I’m accustomed to coastal California chill, but had it in my head that my first full day on the farm would be an escape from the weather off the bay. Luxuriating in Brentwood’s mediterranean-style warmth is going to have to wait until the afternoon, it turns out.

If you aren’t too busy working on your apron tonight, take half an hour and make some cookies for tomorrow’s breakfast. Bonus if you finish the apron and wear it to make the cookies! I promise these little breakfast treats are waaay easier than donuts, and a lot better for your arteries. These guys are soft and chewy and you can use any flavor of conserves or preserves you like, as long as it’s high quality.
