What Are They? Also known as the temple orange, Royal Mandarins are actually a tangor (a variety of mandarin that is a cross between a tangerine and an orange).
Origins/History: A natural tangor discovered in 1896 in Jamaica, the Royal Mandarin was first brought to Florida in the early 1900's. It is now grown in limited quantities in California, producing excellent fruit in the warmest interior valleys.
Nutritional Value: Royal Mandarins are an excellent source of vitamin C and folate, and also contain dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, vitamin A, and beta carotene. Roral Mandarins are a good source of antioxidants.
How to cut/peel: Easy to peel and the fruit sections easily.
Serving Suggestions: Royal Mandarins can be used in both fresh and cooked applications. Whole segments can be used in sauces and salads, and chopped segments can be used in salsas, baked goods, and syrups. The juice and zest are ideal for cocktails, sangria, marinades, dressings, curds, and sauces. Royal Mandarins will keep at room temperature but should be refrigerated for longer storage.
